Sermon Title: CHANGE HAS COME
December 25, 2020
Greetings Rosewood Family and Friends,
I pray your family is in good spirits and the best of health. This year has brought many unexpected changes for many of us. The systems of man have failed, and the wisdom of humanity is uncertain about our future. But God’s people—need never fear. Psalm 107:28-29 tells us, “...they cry out to the Lord in their trouble, and He brings them out of their distresses. 29 He calms the storm, so that its waves are still.”
In this season of Advent, many of us are crying out to the Lord in the midst of trouble. The challenges of today are not unlike the challenges Mary and Joseph faced because God was bringing His Son into the world. For Joseph, who obviously had questions about the possibility of Mary’s infidelity, in Matthew 1, and Mary herself, being told she would have a virgin birth. They too, found themselves crying out to God. Every individual and generation beginning with Adam and Eve, after the fall of humanity has experienced seasons of difficulty when we must cry out to God.
The celebration of Advent or “Coming” reminds us during the winters of life; God will always be present, Emmanuel, (God with us)! This year, 2020 has been a time of trails and trauma for many. I personally have experienced family trauma and the unexpected loss of dear friends. None of us are exempt from difficulty or the pain of life; that’s why God gives us Holy Ghost power!
This season, we are reminded, against all the odds, God is with us. Against the odds, this year, we’ve established a new leadership team, hired a pastor, fed hundreds of hungry people and individually, supported missions. And against the odds, we’ve kept the doors of the church open to keep the fire burning, and the legacy of faith that God will continue to work with, in and through the people of Rosewood UMC!
This season we are reminded that when God is with us, He is also for us and working on our behalf. We may not always see what God is doing, but we know in our hearts that He’s fulfilling his word in Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.” The birth of Christ is not only a reminder of Jesus being born in this world, it’s a reminder that we have been born again; now, we are joint heirs with Christ. Without Christmas, there is no Resurrection!
Isaiah 9:6-7 “For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end, upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, to order it and establish it with judgment and justice from that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.”
Without a Christmas tree, without presents, without loved ones, without a family meal, without, (you fill in the blank, ________). Jesus, Christ is still born! Hallelujah, we don’t need all the stuff to celebrate Your birthday! This year, let’s celebrate Jesus’ birthday in simplicity, soberly and in the spirit with gratitude! We are thankful, not because we received a lot of gifts, no, we’re thankful because our Savior, Jesus Christ was born. And there isn’t a better gift for me/us to get or give than Jesus. Thank God for that baby in a manger! Thank God for our Savior, thank God for Jesus!
Let’s celebrate Christmas with a renewed expectation and hope in God! And let us live out the meaning of Christmas every day of the new year. In closing, here are two verses that provide me with encouragement: 2nd Chronicles 16:9a “Behold the eyes of the Lord are searching the whole earth to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose hearts are perfect towards Him.” Hebrews 10:39 “But we are not of those who shrink back..., but of those who believe to the saving of the soul.” Let’s be salt and light in this world! Lastly, please know that our family is praying that each of us will experience the true Spirit of Christmas.
Merry Christmas,
Pastor Joseph Hamilton
